How to Help Kids Handle their Emotions

Have you wondered how to help kids handle their emotions? This Run Lift Mom Podcast Episode is an interview with Alison Brown, Power Emotions founder & behavioral expert.

What is Emotional Intelligence?

So many of us have learned to deny, hide, suppress, and act out our feelings rather than embrace them. Emotional intelligence (EI) is a term you’ve probably heard related to the ability to manage our feelings. EI has to do with the following:

  • Self-awareness.
  • Self-regulation.
  • Motivation.
  • Empathy.
  • Social skills.

About the Guest

My guest, Alison Brown, is a homeschooling mom of five. She started studying emotional intelligence ten years ago in order to teach her kids about their feelings. When she had to deal with three bouts of prenatal depression, she realized that she needed better techniques to handle her own emotional ups and downs.

Her research led her to develop the Power Emotions system to help people get in touch with the healthy forms of anger, sadness, and fear – instead of trying to suppress them – and use their power to experience more calm, confidence, and happiness.

Here’s what she says:

Emotions we think of as negative, like anger, sadness, and fear, actually show up to help us handle the challenges of life. When we know how to use these emotions, they become our allies in making choices that align with our values. They help us respond to situations the way we want to, rather than overreacting.

Alison Brown, Power Emotions

She helps parents with the following skills: recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating emotions.  As you can see from her emotion pyramid, recognizing and honoring emotions is the foundation if you want to help kids handle their emotions.

With lack of awareness, education, and resources to support parents in communicating with kids about their own feelings and actions, it’s not uncommon for both parties to struggle: physically, emotionally, mentally, and in their relationships.

Tapping into the components of emotional intelligence and using a system (any system!) for communicating with your children should be a priority!
